Dear Member:

The Northern Virginia Estate Planning Council’s next luncheon will be on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Maggiano’s, 2001 International Drive, Tysons Galleria, II, Tysons Corner, at 11:30 a.m.

We are fortunate to have as our speaker Thomas M. Forrest, President of US Trust of Delaware. When forming or administering a trust, the choice of the trust jurisdiction will be crucial to accomplishing the goals of your clients. Tom Forrest will point out the key factors you should consider when choosing a trust jurisdiction for a trust. He will explain the advantages and drawbacks of different favorable trust jurisdictions as well when it may be beneficial to change a trust’s jurisdiction.  He will describe several different methods that can be used to move a trust’s jurisdiction including by merger, decanting, non-judicial settlement agreement and by court petition. You will gain a greater understanding of the importance of a trust’s jurisdiction as well as the potential pitfalls that should be avoided in moving a trust’s jurisdiction.

Tom Forrest is a co-founder and President of U.S. Trust Company of Delaware and joined U.S. Trust Company in 1999. Tom was Vice President and Manager of the Trust Tax and Financial Planning Division for Wilmington Trust for 18 years. Mr. Forrest is a past President of the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils and held leadership positions in many other estate planning organizations. Mr. Forrest has lectured to professional groups on a variety of tax and estate planning topics at numerous meetings and seminars around the county including the National Graduate Trust School, ABA Tax Compliance Seminar, Financial Planning Association and the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. Tom graduated from the University of Delaware in 1982 with a B.S. in Accounting, received his M.S. in Taxation from Widener University in 1985 and his Certified Public Accountant Certificate in 1986.
